Annie's birth mother realizes who she is and tries to arrange a meeting, but Annie refuses, embittered by memories of being abandoned by her as a child. Meanwhile, with Nellie's permission, Percival confronts his mother-in-law over her interference in their lives by her overprotectiveness of Nellie. The aftereffects caused her to go blind, and she was carrying Annie at the time of the sickness, who contracted them as well. Mary, who has recently gone blind, is sent to a blind school in Iowa, where she meets Adam Kendall.
